Field of Sunflowers

On the rare occasions I get to see anything other than sport on the telly, I have seen a field of sunflowers between programmes, which begs me to ask you experts, how close together can you grow giant sunflowers?

Near where my OH works there is sometimes a field of sunflowers, it looks amazing. I grew them close together in a line against my fence at the lottie they grew really big, unfortunatly so did the roots and broke the wire fence when I got them out.

There are lots of fields of sunflowers near me and I'm always amazed how close together they are planted, often no more than 6". There again they don't plant tall varieties anymore. :-(
