  • Acer Died?

.A neighbour gave me this Acer last summer which has thrived in this pot. all the new spring leaves just withered and died with no new green shoots. Is this normal?

Acers are so temperamental in pots. Could be a few things, late frost catching the new leaves, the pot drying out too fast in a warm spell, or just the stress of being moved. Worth scratching the bark on a few stems to check if there's still green underneath. If there is, it might just be sulking and push new growth later.

Our Acer Bloodgood (in a border) looked amazing before the May frosts, now it's leaves looks sad and brown and will soon drop off. The ones in pots managed a bit better as they weren't in full leaf and rather then dry out stayed damp and look good.

As JoaoLeaftide says check the bark to see if it's still alive, if it is it's a case of waiting for the next lot of leaves to appear. Maybe later this year (as some of our pot ones did last year) or next year...

Ok thanks, that at least makes sense. Yes the stem is still greenish when scratched.
