  • Dahlias.

Anybody else have their dahlias coming into growth.
While giving the garden a good tidy up I found six of my dahlias have started growing,
Surely this is a bit early..

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I've got mine in pots in the polytunnel at the moment so they're nice and warm still.

However I am also growing a load of new ones from seed. These are about a foot tall now and have been on my table in the back garden hardening off for 2 weeks now.

I rarely get a May frost in my part of the world so if coastal Dublin is similar, I reckon yours are pretty much on time.

Mine are doing the same, started poking through about two weeks ago. I've left them for now but keeping an eye on the forecast - if we get another cold snap I'll chuck some fleece over them. Everything does seem to be running early this year.

I will, hold off for another three weeks or so before I start hardening the plants off, though the lowest temperature in the next two week forecast is 5c I will continue covering all my plants overnight with fleece, I also like to see the Ash tree in leaf before considering planting out.
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Yesterday despite pinching out the dahlias grown from seed a while back I had to nip off a flower bud as the plant was not big enough. They are a mixed packet and I am donating most to a local plant sale so will never know what colour it could have been. Ah well. Have kept 2 decent sized ones for myself and a small one that came through late as have a theory that sometimes the later germinating ones can be the most interesting! All in GH although can def be planted out here now.
