  • Is it to late to dividing Dianthus?

    Hi everyone.

I have a Dianthus which need dividing.
    Q1: Can Dianthus be divided?
Q2: If yes, is it to late to divided it now?

    Thanks
    Richard

    Yes, they can be divided

To the letter of the 'guidelines', dividing's done in spring and non-flowering shoots used for propagating by cuttings in summer (they root super easy for me in a glass of water).

If it's a decently established clump I'd personally have no issues with dividing now as we're only just into summer but it would depend on the variety.

If it's a later flowering one I'd risk it.

If it's an early one & is starting to flower I'd be hesitant to risk possibly setting it back and missing the full potential blooms. You could wait for an early one to finish flowering but the deeper we get into summer, the more you've passed the 'spring' official division window & I'd be more hesitant then.

Either way I'd be taking some cuttings

Thanks Andraste for the very helpful reply.

Good news it can be divided

Its in flower now so i think i better wait till next spring. Why i ask, its got much to big for the pot its in, so maybe i can repot it into a bigger pot till next spring and divided next year.

Thanks again for the very helpful reply.

You're most welcome - pleased to be useful

A bigger pot & dividing in spring sounds a really good plan

I put clingfilm on top of the glass & poke the cuttings through little holes to help them just dangle. Don't forget to remove the lower leaves & change the water occasionally. Hope it works for you too

              Hi Andraste.

have taken the cutting and put in a glass of water removing lower leaves as you said.
Only about an inch long as the rest is woody, fingers crossed it works.
I take it they wont root if the bottom part of the cutting woody?

The soft stems are likely to root faster but I'd give some of the longer bits a shot too (nothing to lose). They can take a while to get going so be patient & keep changing our the water x

UPDATE: covered in flowers now with lots of new buds showing too.

Not seen so many flowers on it in years

Thank you everyone for your helpful advice.
