  • Plant ID please

This is either a cutting or a seed I must have randomly shoved in a pot sometime last year. It looks vaguely familiar and it must be something I like or I wouldn't have done it. Can one of you clever people identify it for me please?

I can't believe nobody knows what this is. Or maybe nobody has found this thread?

      Not a clue sorry!
Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!

I have no idea, but I've just looked using Google lens and there are Spaniards in the UK discussing similar looking plants in the UK. The suggestions are wildly different: honeysuckle, Prunus japonica and sunflower that's not thriving.

What will you do? Leave it to see how it turns out?

My first thought was a prunus of some description, but then couldn't really find a match. It certainly looks like it should be something nice/useful - leave it to grow for another year?

Sorry- I have no idea either!

I’m sort of wondering if it could be a cherry sapling?

There's something really familiar about it that's really niggling at me so I don't think it's something particularly exotic but I can't seem to get the grey cells working right to be sure what it is!

I'm not convinced I'm right (hence not replying previously) but in the absence of a more knowledgeable person replying I'm inclined to say it's a honeysuckle of some description. The smaller lower leaves and stem look particularly honeysuckle like to me. Maybe a bush honeysuckle as they have that bronzy type thingamy to the leaves going on when they first come out in spring? But I could be completely wrong too

Thanks for looking, all. It's definitely not honeysuckle, I have two so would not have taken more cuttings. I'm racking my brains trying to remember if I took a prunus cutting from somewhere, or if I shoved a couple of cherry stones in, though I don't think I'd do that. (But I'm not sure I didn't!) I'll keep it for a year and see what develops, it's not in the way ATM in that pot.

So it might be a cherry then?
The reason I suggested that is that my sweet black cherry sends off suckers from its roots and they look very similar colouring.
Could you have been munching on some delicious black cherries and bunged a few of the stones in the pot..on the off chance?

It's not beyond the realms of possibility, Nicos. I wonder if I furtled in the soil under it whether I would find the remains of the stone?

Failing that, do you have squirrels in the garden occasionally?
We don't just find cherry pits from our tree in the borders and pots, we find whole bloomin' walnuts!!!

Too many neighbourhood cats for squirrels to venture out from the spinney, Mark!
