They usually recommend cutting a slot by sticking your spade in the soil and levering it backward and forward a bit, then trickle some sand in and put your rose prunings along the length of the slot. Tuck the soil back, go away and leave them for a year. They should be rooted by then if they're going to. unfortunately I can't remember the best time of year to do it - I think it's late summer/early autumn or the stems won't be long enough.
