Honeysuckle

Having cleared out the woods by the garden last year I can now see loads of honeysuckle plants waking up. I would like to take some cuttings to grow up trees and along a sparse blackthorn to make a hedge. The honeysuckle sends out runners (like strawbs) do they all do this or is it a wild thing? could i just pull up a few runners and move them to where I want them or is it more complicated than that???

It's what I did last summer, pull up a few, stick them in a pot, and now I have a nice looking baby tree which is sending new branches from everywhere!
It's very hardy so no worries...

You've got two choices assuming the honeysuckle is in the wild which means you can't dig it up.

What you can do is either

1. Layer a peice and seperate that next year and plant that. Or
2. Take bud cuttings in Late Spring/Early summer

Bud cuttings are a bit more of a fiddle but you get more plants for your money ... well it would if you paid for them

Be careful Tootles. Honeysuckle can strangle trees. There are some trees in the nearby neglected wood with the most amazing deformed branches where the honeysuckle has climbed up them and restricted the growth. Just think what tight tree ties can do to a tree!

I would let it romp through Blackthorn though. Evil stuff

Don't worry, there are still more than enough blackthorns left for sloe gin I have pulled out nearly 25m2 of the stuff and have the scars to show for it!!!
The honeysuckle is mine so no worries there and doesn't seem too invasive as it has been untouched for more than 30 years and the trees are rampant...
