You are meant to separate the bulbs each year so they produce better.

Thanks NG. I thought it would be every few years when they looked congested.
Don't think I'll ever succeed with saffron then as its too labour intensive for a lazy chicken.

Why do you empty out the pots?

when the leaves start to yellow in June I take them out and store in a net in the shed. I can then use the space to grow loads of herbs and other tasty stuff. FYI this is only my 2nd year but they seem to have survived the summer in the shed. I am hoping to improve on my haul of 12 stamens from last year
