What distance is acceptable/kind for Ex Batts to travel?

Hello. I am hoping to take on 3 or 4 Ex Batts. I haven't booked any yet, as they are all at least a 2 hour drive away. What would be an acceptable distance for them to travel? It may be 2 or 3 months before any are available near to me. Thanks, Beenie.

Hello,
I am in Edinburgh. As far as I can see, the nearest at the moment is Ayr or Carlisle which are approx 2-3 hours away.
I don't mind the driving but it might be too much for the chooks. What do you think?

Mine have come from places within about 30 minutes drive but the rescued ones probably had a longer journey beforehand to reach the collection point.
Have you tried CONTACT - Wing and a Prayer - Edinburgh They're in Edinburgh.

I would just take a couple of stops and offer water, especially on a hot day also keep them in the dark as much as possible it is meant to calm them. Otherwise 2 hours is pushing it. Mine have done an hour but that was in Feb as well.

Hello. I thought 2 hours was a bit much too. They will have had a traumatic few hours before the actual journey and it might just tip the balance for them. I'll just have to hang on till some a bit nearer are available. Now that I have definately decided to get them, I can hardly wait!

Use the waiting time to get the coop and run set up and reading about their needs. Time flies when you're waiting for chooks

Considering that the alternative is that they're going to chicken heaven... surely a slightly stressful 2 hours (with at least one stop) is better than that?!?!

Hello.
Yesterday I sent the BHWTrust an email asking what they thought about a 2 hour journey for the chooks. They replied and said as long as the box was well ventilated and they had maybe one stop to check on them, they would be fine. So it looks like I will be going to Carlisle on the 3rd of June! I will be very anxious about the journey but will do my best for them. .
Meanwhile I have bought a hen house and run and will be picking it up on Saturday. It is new and flat packed so Hubby will have fun putting it together. As for me, I will be keeping well out of the way!
