    Kathy, young birds do lay a smaller egg - they will get bigger over time. the colour of the egg usually gets paler throughout the season. You may find its just a blip and the next one will be really dark, nothing to worry about though.
    I had 6 eggs this morning, none of them from a maran. Light Sussex are reliable, but I love that big dark brown egg. Fingers crossed I will get one soon.

      I got my four rescue hens last September and they've been laying 3 to 4 eggs a day ever since. Wonder is that because they're battery hens? Or because they're so happy to be out of the barn!!

        Ha!...a tiny 9g wind egg from someone today!...awww!

        Also got my first broody today kathy- the lass we saved last year...must be Spring eh?
