Since my Bluebell's feathers have grown back after her rapid moult she's looking decidedly grey around the back of her head,very silvery. Has anyone elses chooks gone grey as they've aged? She's about 2 1/2 years old.

Betty ( black and grey speckles) is also 2 1/2.
Her black markings are turning a sort of brown colour now.
I hadn't really noticed until we got a new chook the same original colour- and then noticed the contrast."Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple

My 5 year old Black Rock is certainly paler black than she was so I guess you could say she's going grey!
She never moults out properly but is still laying.

Chickens don't go grey like us, but the feathering can change over time, so each time a new set is grown they can come through a slightly different shade. Sometimes you can also get a blip - last year one of my cream legbars grew a few black feathers on her breast after her moult, this year she has lost them and regrown salmon coloured breast feathers. Also feathers that are yet to be moulted can go a sort of brown (as Nicos describes) as the pigment is bleached out over the summer. Feathers fade in the sun(lol!!!when was the last time we saw that!) - our ex show silver laced wyandotte cockerel is useless for showing now and has a yellowing to his feathers which was not there last year.Comment
