  • I did the right thing............

Had to cull a young cockerel today. He was lame and appeared to be in pain when he tried to stand. He was a pitiful sight and as I was integrating his brothers and sisters into an even bigger flock he had to go.
If I hadn't culled him the Faverolle cockerel would have, even though he's a big wuss at heart...............bit like me really, as I bottled it the first time when he looked at me with those doleful eyes.
I put him back in the coop but I new it would have been cruel to leave him so I went back and got him, took him down the other side of the lottie so the others couldn't see, explained to him that I was sorry but he would be happier in chooky heaven, and did the deed!
Still a bit upset about it having hatched him an all, but I know in my heart of hearts I did the right thing.

The upside is that the integration appeared to go well and Faverolle cockerel and his four
ISA browns wasn't at all bothered about having three other young cockerels and three young hens in with him.
They're too fast for the auld bugger to get a had of anyway!
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

Ah Snadger, poor you. Best done though, and quickly if he was suffering.

This is the reason I couldn't keep chickens. Poor little bugger.
Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing-'Oh how beautiful!" and sitting in the shade,
While better men than we go out and start their working lives
At grubbing weeds from gravel paths with broken dinner-knives. ~ Rudyard Kipling

Hard, isn't it? But yes, you did right.

Part and parcel of being a responsible owner. Well done for making the right choice though!

I hope you plucked him and put him the freezer Snadge and didn't waste him. I hate "doing" our poultry but I like eating them and once they're done you give a big sigh of relief. I have some drakes to do as soon as I have a few hours for the plucking. I did a bit of training and have my slaughterers licence (poultry only) and use an electric stunner so I know the end is quick, painless and stress free but it is still not easy!

I can't stand the taste (or lack of) of supermarket chicken nowadays. Home raised for me every time. Yes it is hard when it comes to culling time but oh so worth it when it's on the plate.

Funny you mention the taste RH - the only one of ours that I've eaten was soooooo delish that I don't mind if half my incy eggs turn out to be Cocks! Even a blimmin expensive free ranger from the Butcher tasted bitter after a home grown one.

I feel sick! Daughter and I can't eat chicken anymore. It feels like eating one of the girls. BTW I am not vegetarian.
Watched my farmer aunty neck a duck using a broom handle years ago - haunted me for decades - won't eat duck either.

Don't care for ducks. Don't like snakes. Trying to hold a duck is like wrestling an Anaconda!
