Fumigating smoke bombs for red mite

Hi all,
has anybody tried the fumigating smoke bombs sold to erradicate red mites in the hen house?

Not seen them or tried them but sounds like a brilliant idea to add to the armoury! Do you know where they are available from?

After reading this thread I have done a small amount of investigating on t'internet. I think generall consensus is that they are not very affective. But too be honest what is very affective on these little buggers!

If you have a long enough lead to your hen-house a steam cleaner is very effective!

i thought they were for eradicating red spider mites from greenhouses,i drench my greenhouse in ***** fluid (inside) and set off a smoke bomb the following day,i do this each autumn,i sprayed my coop with ***** start of april,after trying to get rid of mites for ages,the following week i started using diatom powder as well,each sunday,when everything is removed from coop and replaced,i have a 2ft sq.plant tray in the coop floor.to roll up the floor newspapers onto,i dust the coop floor with the powder first,then put one end down,quickly dropping the tray,it sends the powder into the air and literally gets everywhere,like a mist,it was an accident the first time but now done every sunday(close the coop as you drop the tray), and i have had not one mite since,i am not saying its infallable,but its certainly working for me,and more importantly,for the chooks...so good luck with whatever you decide to do.....

I only ever use creosote substitute and that works very well. Hardly ever have red mite except in an old house with a different design which has rather more crevices, but a good splash of creosote at the first sign sorts them out.

Creosote for me too - I just paint it in the cracks and joins of wood. Works a treat.

smoke bombs

Hi All,
Buffs...I love the idea of the Diatomous bomb I will try this.
I have to admit I havent ever seen any evidence of red mite yet......and boy do I keep looking!!.
I powder puff all the cracks and crevices with red mite powder every Sunday.
We have only had hens since Feb 2010 and the hen house was new, during the Autumn last year we erected a �14.99 gazebo over the actual hen house to keep it dry during the winter (also keeps me dry when I am aning, feeding and collecting eggs!).
I do wonder if this has kept me red-mite free?......as I thougt the mites came in via wild birds, we dont have birds perching on the actual hen house roof - because of the gazebo

I had a small infestation in one nest-box last year (due to lack of hygiene - thanks Dad! ) I sprayed with Smite. I dose = Gone! Did a second dose the following day, just in case - fab stuff!

Ditto with Poultry shield. Sorted out red mite from my new girls in a couple of days. After the first day the mites were crawling everywhere (one their way out and confused). I obviously need to get out more because I spent a good couple of hours watching and squashing each and every one :-)

when i am cleaning out the coop,the boss bird stands at the coop door watching,burbling,i have to remove her and shut the door before putting in the diatom and dropping the tray,then she stands at the door to see what i have done,every sunday now...birdbrained
