raw or not.

can someone tell me if i am doing any harm to the chooks by hanging large raw carrots in the run,for them to peck at ?, i read somewhere that root crops have always to be cooked,but i have been giving mine raw,as they seem to love them,i just want to make sure i am not building up problems by feeding them raw roots as playthings(they seem to queue up when its down to last bits),and they leave nothing...

I can't imagine why raw carrots would be dangerous, unless they choke on them?

they are the roughest,biggest carrots i have seen,i get them from the local greengrocer and he only charges me 40p a kilo, some are 2-2 1/2ins across and nearly 1ft long,as long as they wont do any damage,im happy,but the speckled hen goes to take a peck and it swings back and knocks her backwards,she doesnt seem to learn though(carrots heavier than her,she is only a tiny thing)..thanks a lot for answering that for me....

i give mine the same,but was told not to give the any of the pea/bean family,have i been misinformed?

Now you have me racking my brain, have almost certainly given them peas and pea shoots,the only other thing I can remember as a definate no no was avocado

Mine get all the runner beans that have gone stringy. They help themselves to the pea shoots. There's lots of things on a 'not to eat' list but then the same things appear on a 'give to eat' on another website. (parsley for one) The only things all websites seem to agree on is no to avocado and raw potatoes.

raw carrots may give them orange poo .... orangey skin .... and make your egg yellows darker in colour .... other than that ... no bad effects

Not sure whether the need to cook beans (the seed-bit) applies to chooks as well as humans?
Carrots cannot be a bad thing unless they are eating really vast quantities of them (which seems unlikely).

My lot won't eat carrots either. Unless grated and cooked. I also cook the beans and chop small. Mind you I often eat a bean seed myself without cooking it.

Mine won't eat carrots either, or potatoes. They prefer fruit (for heavens sake!!)

Mine love carrots, raw or cooked. We call carrot peelings orange worms and they get so excited when I throw a load in, everyone running around with beakfuls.

i just had a vision of you feeding chooks with a cloth over your arm,like all good waiters,serving the first course,and i thought my chooks were spoilt?....
