Dogs and Chickens

i have a staff cross, and he doesnt batter an eyelid, always let the chickens out in the garden, they do there thing and my dog does his!

Early training will help. NEVER leave them alone together (you can teach the dog to leave chooks alone - might be harder with a terrier - but not impossible) but you can't train chooks not to 'investigate' with a beak, and it's a rare dog that would refrain from retaliating if pecked on the nose!
My previous dog, a border collie, was fine with cats, until the day he met one which scratched his nose.....

the only time our labrador has ever snapped/growled at a chicken was when one tried to eat her breakfast! Enough said!

My allotment neighbour has Light Sussex and Silkies and recently hatched 4 Speckled Sussex. He has 2 terriers (JR and Border) who never bother with the hens having been brought up with them and suitably trained - until his back was turned and they killed all 4 Speckled Sussex but never touched the white birds. Colour prejudice or what?

pmsl .... poor angus .... do they do the running up to him and pulling his tail when he's asleep thing? *GRINS* .... they were brought up with cats and dogs, in the house, they aren't scared of much are they .... even hoovers lol

awwwwwww thats just mean, they are only playing .... pingu used to sleep on poppys head when she was a baby, and also on the top of my laptop .... these aren't 'just' chickens ... they think they are humans lol

..I have been wary about my dogs and my banties but my old collie can be quite useful - yesterday he helped me round up two young Pekins who had escaped, back into their run. He was quite gentle as long as I didn't get agitated or try to actually catch the chook, then I have to admit that he did pick one up by the tail. But all in all, quite handy to have around, and very happy to be 'helping'.
Meanwhile the spaniel just wolfed down all the leftover crumbs and pellets............useless!

Well so far so good, We picked up the Westie (Female) on the Tuesday and she had met the Chickens a few times now and does not seemed bothered by them. The Chickens though do not seem so pleased about the new arrival though and are always making lots of noise to show they are not amused, hopefully though with a little patience the Chickens will get used to her.

We wont be letting them out together though just yet and even then the dog will be kept on a lead/supervised ..etc
