Seriously,the only thing I'd say from our experience is that you could end up with three different flocks that are too young to mix with your oldies and possibly each other....but if you can sort the runs/coops.....Good Luck egg hunting xxx

You are very lucky. A broody Welsummer is a rare thing. They aren't supposed to make good mothers but someone else on here (can't remember who) had a broody Welsummer who hatched and reared successfully, so let's hope yours does too.

Not one of my Welsummers has ever gone broody. :-(

We had one go last year too, and because we didn't want any chicks, I ended up with her in a wire crate.... took ages to 'break' her...

That's why I'm going to see if I can get her to hatch anything. As long as she'll hatch, I can do the rest with the chicks if necessary.

Why is it they don't often go broody?

It's just a breed trait. Just as Silkies and Sussex are known for their broodiness, Welsummers are known for not going broody.

I guess it would be just as rare to have a Silkie that didn't go broody!

our buff orpington, june is sitting on eggs too, she is all fluffed up and swore at George when he went near her!

Guess what? Don't believe it, but one of my young Welsummers is a bit broody (nearly fainted)! Must have picked up the vibes from yours OWG (even if you are a long way away). Not tight enough yet but if she continues sitting today I may try and move her to a broody coop.

I've been trying to get some Welsummers for ages. I have one hen that was hatched at home but don't want to try that again as the remainder were boys. Getting hold of hatching eggs seems easy but getting hold of POL seems reaaly difficult around here.

I have lots of self-discipline, but it doesn't apply to chickens!!!

I've wanted some Barnvelders for ages, but they've been going for silly prices at the poultry auctions. I've not got an incubator, so when Mrs Welsummer went broody I jumped at the chance!

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Shame you don't live up here Avril! I discovered yet another breeder within 5 miles of me! He has Welsummer growers and I'm thinking of getting some to go with the ASBO chix and the Cowardy Custards! And someone else nearby has Cream Legbars.............but that's another story!!!!

Ggggrrr. The vet tells me he's seeing more chickens lately but still don't know of anyone else around here with any. However there is a new supplier for Meadowsweet Poultry about 10 miles away and I've got my eye on a Blackrock and Black star. Just waiting until Orchid shows no sign of illness as don't want newbies getting ill too.

My hatching eggs arrived yesterday - all packaged up lovely and snug

They are now resting ready for tonight, when we'll have to do the stealth egg move....

Any tips on how to make this go smoothly?
