I kind of get where you're coming from Snadge in that I don't see the point,but not so sure I'd go so far as saying it's wrong?
Do Silkies and other 'pretty' breeds deserve more attention just because they're pretty?

I was confused by that too, seemed to be saying that it was OK to keep chooks locked up if they were churning out lots of eggs

I considered keeping chooks (probably ex batts) on the plot but decided against it as a) we don't eat that many eggs and b) realistically I can't get to the plot enough, especially in bad weather and that wouldn't be fair.

im with you snadger, if people are not going to give their birds ample room,no matter what breed or hybrid,they all deserve a good sized run,to be allowed to roam about,just being chooks,my measuring stick is "would i like it if i were a chook" and that means we wont get any more birds,no crowding more in than the area warrants,so i will just admire the photos put on threads for foreseeable future....

It is a bit in keeping with people who use a big part of their lottie for flowers; it may not be to everyones liking, but they can do that if they like.

Perhaps they are trying to breed them. I am not very knowledgeable about chooks, but are they worth a bit more than regular 'laying' types.

I agree too ,Would'nt keep pointless birds myself but maybe some owners at the allotments have them to give them motivation and encouragement to go to the allotment .
Or to keep there kids amused So they can dig in peace

I've just found out late in my MOMmyship(which btw is over for me now) that one of the perks of being a MOM is that you get some additional icons to use on your posts. The thumbs down is one of them and I thought I'll just flex my muscles............why not says I.

I don't think breed should matter but maybe a time frame before your allowed to move up to livestock be it chickens.

I'm new to having my own plot and time will tell if i'm going to be one of the allotment flash in the pans. I do however worry that too many people are jumping in trying to do it all and live the good life and then getting bored. It's one thing letting your veg rot or run to seed and another getting bored with letting the chicken outs everyday before you trek off into work.

I would love some chooks but for now i'll go and look at daves on the plot round and corner and dream about one day owning a cockrel as beautiful as his.

I have 30 chooks. Three are cockerels I bred myself and two are Black Minorca's I bought from auction.
The rest, all 25 of them I have aquired for nothing in dribs and drabs being other peoples cast offs!
In my view an animal is for life and people need to take this into consideration when buying chooks. (I wouldn't be surprised if I was offered some silkies and miniature game birds for nowt in the near future)

paulottie - goats arent any good for keeping the grass down. they prefer much more sturdy greenery like nettles, cabbage basically anything but grass. Grass will be eaten as a last resort.

However, and effective grass mower is a goose - if you can stand the poo left behind, or even better, put some arks up and chuck on a couple of rabbits. Rabbits can provide 1000% of their own body weight in baby rabbits each year, all ripe for the table. So not only does your grass get cut, but you can eat the mowers when they get big enough!!!
