what a lovely boy!is he gentle?

Seems very gentle at the moment, but was only hatched in September, so still quite young. No spurs yet, just tiny stumps. He hasn't let me catch him, but he doesn't rush away, and seems pretty calm. He has a lovely presence, just strutting around like he doesn't know he's gorgeous!

I'm undecided whether to handle him a lot, so he sees me as a friend and therefore no threat, or just to let him be. All advice gratefully received.

I would handle him as much as you can. You will need to check him over anyway for lice/general condition so start by picking him off the roost at night and giving him a cuddle. Pretty much all chooks can be handled at night however wild they are in the daytime. He may squawk if he's not used to it but persevere. Also get him to come to the corn pot along with ladies at treats time. Tame him by encouraging him to eat from the pot, then your hand. While eating from your hand you can stroke his back with the free hand. Over time you may be able to then pick him up out of the run as he pecks corn.

Lovely boy G4, almost as handsome as Snadger and Festher (err that will be Snadger the cockeral of course, I'm not qualified to comment on the original Snadger of course )
2nding Richmond. Lots of handling, and time spent around him and wives, he'll soon start to think of you as 'best mate' If I call for Snadger he'll come to his name, so will Trousers (stroppy banty Orp, well picks on OH but not me ) the other boys do know their names but dont always answer to them. But they've all been hand raised by me except Trousers. And will all complain about being caught but will let me carry them round without bothering.

I have two Indian Game cockerels. Trevor, who is picked up to be put in his box at night and picked up in the morning to be let out with his girls is gentle and kind. Maurice a.k.a. "You B*****d" isn't. I hold a weldmesh panel in front of me when I go into his run, though he doesn't always run at it.
I can't decide whether it's the handling or the breeding. I think, maybe, a bit of both.

Erm, well, he's more mature than I thought!

I was in the coop this evening, chatting to the 'Laydees' that were first to go in, and himself was inside too. With no fuss or warning, he wandered up to one of the older Batties, leapt on her back, there was a quick hissing sound, and off he got ruffling his feathers!

Just to update anyone who's interested. Young Valentino, is not the gentleman I had thought (well is is from over the border! ). His chat-up lines are obviously far too vulgar for my 'Laydees,' most of whom have now been... er... erm... de-flowered? (I think that's the term.) He just grabbs them by the neck and leaps on them! Some of them just put up with it, but the elder 'Laydees' stand up and yell at him and tell him to ... off!

Today, I was sitting on my stool, chatting to the 'Laydees' when something hit me in the middle of my back. I looked round to see him picking himself up and shaking his feathers. Strike One! I chased him around a bit, pretending to try and catch him. Tomorrow, I'm taking in the net, and he will be cuddled. Like it or not!

I was not frightened, so that's a good start!
