Snadger. Seriously.Give them corn, porridge and some seed mix and cut back the layer mix a bit. They need their strength to keep podgy and warm right now and it's also moult and feather regrowth time for good layers in a particularly horrible cold spell.

They need a rest and reduced laying now or they'll lose strength.
Sorry if anyone disagrees but this is odd. Unless you've got go go go special lights feed set up going you should expect about half summer laying at this time for them to not burn out.

I agree pickled, especially given the age of some of them. They are all fully feathered now btw.
Went to the corn market yesterday with the intention of getting mixed corn but with the weather the way its been, deliveries are having trouble getting through.
Came away with four 25Kg of layers pellet which was all they had in chook feed.
Hopefully if weather backs off a bit next week I might be able to get some mixed corn!

I do disagree actually. If you are going to cut back the laying feed you should be doing it late autumn, post moult, before going into the dark days of winter. I know we are only in January but already the afternoons are a little lighter and my birds are going to bed a little later, and egg laying is on the increase. Their systems are now picking up ready for high egg production come late Feb/March. They need the protein. I would not want to muck their systems up at this stage.

i feedmy girls lots of corn & porridge just now and just have the layers there as ad lib rations and they are STILL laying every day - so nature seems to think they should be laying just now. they dont have lights or any form of warmth other than what they produce themselves...but they keep laying.

I dont have any lights, just the horse blanket over the coop to keep them warm, but they are still laying...

I've been able to give them to neighbours and friends at my husbands work

Well I'm using around a bag/bagnhalf weekly for 42. 2/3 layers 1/3 mixed grain, topped up with porridge and veg 'soup' four days week.

I had to give up on ad lib as i had 5 or 6 greedy beggers who just stood by the feeders and ate all day, they were turning into barrels and their crops were literally sagging Now everyone polishes their grub off fast, except for the last bit, and I quietly give the 2 or three bullied out ones some extra without the bullies seeing, its easy now they know, they sit on my feet and wait. If its colder they get a bit extra.
Some of the hens are finaly coming into lay so they must think its spring as they dont get any added lights or heat.

I'm just separating whites and yolks, freezing the whites in 2's or 3's in little containers, and the yolks just covered with water individually. I'll pour the water away when I defrost them

I know you can freeze them by separating yolk and white, but can you also freeze them beaten?

if anyone wants the recipe for celebration chocolate brownies from the Green & Blacks book let me know - apart from the fact that it uses FOUR large eggs (got 7 from the girls today!!), it is also yummy!!!
