two missing birds

I just needed to share this with people who would understand how cross and upset I feel.
I have kept 7 chickens in a secure run on my allotment for a number of years without any problems until this christmas. One day I had 7 and the next 5. The run was still locked but the shed had been broken into and a large sack was the only thing missing. I think that they climbed over the 6 foof fence into the chicken run and caught 2 of my birds and carried them away in the sack.... I hope the choke on them as they were both 4 years old and free range (one a sussex and the other an isa) so wont have made a great meal and are not the best of layers now due to their age... the police were not very interested and thought it may have been a fox...obviously never seen what a fox will do to a chicken..........

sorry to hear. It's not the point about them not being the best layers! they're your girls! never seen a fox pack girls into a sack either. Seems more and more girls are disappearing these days. Sorry for your loss

Is it worth you painting the top of the fence they climbed over with that permanent paint esp for burglars????

how awful, I do worry with mine being on the allotment....Why do people do this....actually I ca answer that...some people see them as object rather than as pets and do not see the harm in bagging a couple of them for themselves.

When will people learn that we love our animals, but they do it to dogs as well, there are some not very nice people out there

If a fox came and put just 2 chickens in a sack to take back to the den ......................... what a fantastic piece of news!!! Foxes would have killed the lot there and then and left a dreadful mess. Definitely 2 legged vermin, and I too hope they choked on them

Sorry to hear it BG. Even if they were older chickens it is still a rotten thing to have happen. And you get attached to older ones (well I do). I would be more upset if someone took my 7 year old than one of my POL pullets.

I can sympathise 200% - it's happened to me twice! First time they took 5 out of the 6 (Ithink the 6th was in a dark corner so they missed her) and the second time they targeted 5 pure breed growers I'd bought from the Wernlas collection only 10 days earlier! They broke into the hut with the ex-batts and left them there! Like you the police were uninterested.
I've upped my security but I guess if they're determined they'll find a way. I do hope it doesn't happen to you again.

We went round the Wernlas collection last September, that's what helped me persuade Mr DDL to let me get my chooks! A super place. Well worth a visit.

Yes it is - I'd love to go there again but I know I'd be tempted again. OH likes their birds too - he persuaded me to go there for my "posh" birds, just a shame someone else took such a fancy to them!
One of my friends bought 20 mixed day old chicks from there! Gorgeous!

thanks for all the posts. We have had no further trouble as yet. We are looking at all alternatives for extra security. I miss my girls, they took our first ISA who was a real character and the favourite of the children as she was the first to hand feed corn from them.

As predicited by many on this thread, I am very upset that the ******* have returned and taken another two birds from a neighbouring plot. How low can people go for crying out loud you can pick up an oven ready
(intensively reared) bird for a couple of quid in the supermarket. These are loved pets
we are preparing to put operation "chooks fortress" into place....lets hope that keeps them out.
