help run out of layers pellets

I normally pay about �7 for the bag, have just had to pay �12!

Sorry to rub it in (no i'm not, I love it really!) but my Farmgate layers pellets are usually �4.95 for 20Kg from the cornmarket,whereas I had to pay �7.85 today from Jolley's!

Tis Christmas though......... spose!

My local farm supplies were closed too. Had chook food, but asked OH if there was enough for nags when he did am feed, and he said yes. So of course we ran out of haylage and mix. Fortunately the little supply place at the end of my road (closed till new year) said 'oh thats ok, just nip down at 6 o clock, dads letting the dogs out then and he'll sort you some out' Thank goodness for local suppliers and dads with gundogs..

Lynda my local pets at home sells Dodson and Horrell layers for �6 something..remind me not to move to Manchester

I pay more at Pets at Home, but it saves me driving out of the city to a farm supplies shop ... so I save money on petrol! as for buying in bulk, I understand pellets don't have a long shelf life, so I only buy one bag at a time for my six hens ... lasts over a month when they free range most of the day.

Shelf life of an average bag of layers is around 3 months according to the blurb I have read.

I save 50p a bag buying 10 bags at a time, luckily the Landie can take the weight

Yes standard shelf life is 3 months from manuafcture. This however doesn't mean you can't feed it after that it means that the vitamin and minerals will start to dwindle. All feed should be kept in a dry area and sour feed should not be fed regardless of best before date.
We close for 1 day a year!! We were out delivering feed on Christmas eve and available to customers again on boxing day!!

My post in this thread is well over a year old!..........Having said this, I am still only paying �5.60 for a bag of Farmgate layers pellets at Knox-Hipkins Cornmarket at Swalwell! Across the roundabout and up the bank from Lidl. (Along a backstreet)

By the time my local farm shop gets the stock in, it's usually around 2.5 months of shelf life left (i'd still feed for a couple weeks after, though personally - can't see the harm as long as it's not damp etc).

When I'm half way through a sack I buy another... but during the war they fed them on 'mash' they survived and laid for the people back then, so as above I'd do that if I needed to.

1 20Kg sack lasts me two months, so my current turn over is just about right.. �1/hen/month to feed them is a bargain I'd love to bulk store food, but don't get through it fast enough - I keep mine in a plastic container, in the garage high up. Pretty sure it's rat proof, but I found out the hard way it's not nice proof - found a load of leafs in my mixed corn sack (odd I thought) - then when I moved a bag of leaves out of the garage, to take to the tip a mouse jumped out of them (and subsequently ran into my car - still haven't been able to get it out!)

Most of the rural French hens seem to be chucked a load of corn in the morning, and veg peelings and stale bread during the day! ( free ranging though- which often means on muddy patches)

...and they survive and lay!...so I'll never worry again about a couple of days of surviving without the 'correct' food.
