There is one wind turbine (one I know of, there may be others) in a very good location, in an industrial estate just outside Reading, and yes, it is beside the motorway.
It isn't the views that are the problem with siting them in the countryside, it is the hazard to migrating birds.
The other 'not-so-good' idea is putting them at sea. I don't know how significant the maintenance question is around the coast of Britain, but planting the things in the Med strikes me as just plain daft!
