Yes if they are pure breeds - ie both parents were the same bird.

if they are crossed then not necessarily - dare I ask why?

We had araucana (or however you spell them) crosses and used to get blue/green eggs popping up from time to time for a few generations. I guess it might be pot-luck?

Isn't there another thread which said that if you cross a marans with a legbar you get olive coloured eggs? Much the same as you would if you mixed dark brown and sky-blue paint.

Not sure if it's the case if it's the hen that's the blue egg layer?
I know when we got the Legbar eggs we were told that the Cock carries the gene,from that I assume the hen doesn't?
Therfore I'm guessing that if a Legbar hen was to mate with a say Warren hen,although the egg carrying the chick would be blue,the resulting chick would lay brown eggs?

it all depends on the genetic make up of the birds and whether you are mating a recessive to a dominant, carrier to a non carrier etc. Jennie is better placed at explaining it than me.

all i can remember from her ramblings is that the egg colour is generally inherited from the paternal side, not the maternal. i think i am right in saying that if you mate a blue laying cockerel to a light coloured hen, you will get some blue egg layers and some that carry the blue egg laying gene. if you cross a blue egg carrier (but not laying blue) to a non blue layer then you lose the blue egg laying ability, but if you put two together that carry the blue gene (but not lay blue) then the offspring should be blue egg laying, hence why they occasionally pop up in your flock - but again - jen will confirm.

a true cream legbar should lay light sky blue/green eggs so mixing with a pure arua cockerel should give you a mix of darker laying blue/green egg layers ,I say you wouldnt get lighter color eggs with that mix but they could just stay the same as legbars eggs

I think Gold & Silver lay white eggs.

I don't quite get it,but from what I can make out it's the cock that changes egg colour,so I don't know if that definately means that a blue laying hen bred with a brown laying cock would just produce brown layers and vice versa you'd get a mix of the original hens egg colour & blue...hence Bobbie's Olive green eggs.
Where IS Bobbie...she can tell us who was the mummy/daddy of the olive green layer!
