Probably didn't worm them. the chooks would have eaten dandelions and other herby stuff, and "in the olden days" chooks weren't really confined as they are now so reducing the amount of parasites entering them. I don't suppose they wormed any animal routinelyOriginally posted by petal View PostWhat did people use to worm hens on in the old days?My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

According to a book I have, originally published in 1941, worming methods for chickens included garlic oil capsules, rectal injections of chenopodium oil (whatever that is!), for gapeworm pass a turpentine soaked feather down the windpipe (poor chicken), carbon tetrachloride capsules for roundworm, Epsom salts for hairworm and tapeworm. Most importantly, resting and liming of ground to break worm cycle.
I think Flubenvet is a lot easier, and I suspect, much more effective!!!

Go into "Rule the roost" where the list of threads is and look in the top left side just underneath the BOLD "Rule the roost" and it's there.Originally posted by colliebird View PostThanks for that information. I must be truly dumb because I can't see anywhere on the Menu page that says New Thread. Duh!

Sue,
Do an online search for Flubenvet. I paid 12.01 from Animal Medicines Ltd for 60g, no prescription required. I know it isn't nearly as cost effective as some of the 240g sizes above, but if pennies are short it may suit you better and it will last a very very long time if you only have 3-6 chooks.
I split raspberries in half and did the sharp knife dollop and folded other half of rasberry back to make a sarnie. Always made 4 sarnies for 3 girls cos a lot of thieving went on so someone always got a double dose
If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing to excess

just to clear this up - my jacksy is "exit only"
irrespective of whether you are a king or a hen, of any description!
i am amazed that any bird subjected to some of the medications of our ancestors ever survived! however, i am sure the same will be said of us and our techniques in 50 years time!
