sorry to disapoint elmo and waffler, we dont do wedding stress, we're having a bbq and a camp out, friends are providing live music, and the roast hog, mum is providing the field, OHs dad is a master brewer at a micro brewery, everyone been told to bring wellies and woolies, and if great aunty hilda dont like it she doesnt have to come.
the only thing i worry about is how to wear a dress, OH said he's not marrying me in dungerees and wellies.

Sounds lovely idea for a wedding, suited to the people actually getting married rather than all the hangers on. Have been to too many where it all gets out of hand and they end of costing thousands for a show piece. Ours was fairly traditional but it suited us and I would do it pretty similar if I did it again - just re-read that, wasn't trying to say that I was thinking of doing it again, just in case OH reads this and thinks I'm about to upsticks!

There were 13 people at our wedding (never had any friends ) - sound more like a coven than a wedding !! & we did the whole thing ourselves - far less hassle & we got rid of folks quicker so we could get to the important bit ....... I know what you mean alison, sister in law spent �25000, �1000 just on the dress, if we had a spare �1000 we'd buy some RSJ's and a cooker so we could have a kitchen.

Hope she looked good in it if it cost a grand! Don't mind paying for stuff if it's value for money, but that much for something you'll wear for a few hours and then shove in a box just doesn't stack up. Hope they're very happy in their own self induced poverty. Now a decent kitchen is something you use every day so far better use of cash, even a holiday lasts longer that a single day - any idea how many joists you can get for a grand?

I have to admit, we are struggling with the concept of spending thousands on one day when there's loads of other things we could spend the money on. Unfortunately, in my heart of hearts I quite would like the whole big deal, although it's actually going to be quite a small big deal (if you see what I mean!) I keep trying to cross people off our guest list (LOL) but we do actually want to share our day with our nearest and dearest, and unfortunately, because they will all have to travel some distance, we feel we ought to make it worth their while. Stupid I know. Also, we've been to all their weddings and almost feel we owe them one in return. NUTS!
Yoanbob, your wedding sounds fab, and I'm envious in a way. It's going to be far more personal to you and will probably also be loads of fun (which a lot of weddings aren't!)

On a serious note Mrs Beefy and I didnt want the "Big" day so we cleared off and went to Gretna to the Blacksmiths shop(never did get the horse shod) and told nobody . Like you Waffler we thought it was better to put the money into our house rather than down Aunty alice's throat when we hadn't seen her for 10 years . Came home sent out the invites for a night party in a local hotel a week later invited everybody and had a great night .That was nine years ago and I think we put the whole thing past for about four grand.
My sister-in law spent that on her dress -go figure

Mr D proposed to me on my birthday, 21st Oct 2000, just 6 months after we'd met and only 6 weeks after we'd started going out! He then rang the registra's that week, and they had a slot available on Halloween, so he covered the phone mike and asked, wanna get wed on samhain? I said yes, thinking he was joking, and he booked it there and then, for 6 days later!

We weren't going to invite anyone, just run off and do it (dead romantic like) but 2 days before we realised it may well upset some of our friends, so the 13 guests got 24 hours notice, which was fun! His Best Man got the same notice, and the whole day had a marvellous spontaneity and was sooo romantic!

It worked really well for us, neither of us ever thought we'd marry anyone, and neither of us is conventional, so a big wedding with all the frills wasnt something either of us wanted, but in the last analysis its what you want that matters!

So do I at the moment, she lost a filling yesterday & cracked a tooth & to top it all got an infection ......... ahh peace & quiet..... she didn't even eat the peanut brittle I bought her
