You could start them off in cell trays, lots of people do that with onion sets and i can buy sprouted garlic in cell trays in the garden centre. Then plant out in March.
I would be worried that the frosts would actually freeze the garlic and make it mushy, but thats me being worried as i know that is the right planting out times.
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

      An extract from below:

"After planting, garlic needs a cool, one- to two-month period at temperatures of 0-10°C (32-50°F) for good bulb development. Planting in late autumn (late October to November) or in early spring (depending on the cultivar) will provide the necessary chilling period".

Thanks all - still seems an odd time to be planting them to me - feel like I may as well just stick them in the freezer!

I shall however let you know how I get on!!

Go and buy some from your local farm shop and plant now - then you can compare. You can never have too much garlic
