what would you suggest I can get in the ground??

If you don't get that ground planted or covered (eg. with cardboard) it'll soon be covered in weeds again.
Ideally you'd have plants waiting in the wings, ready to go in the ground as gaps appear. I've just planted a couple dozen kale plants when the early potatoes came out.

Otherwise, I use trailing squashes or green manures as ground cover
