Harvesting first early potatoes

I planted my first row of Red Duke of York potatoes 15 weeks ago. A couple of the plants are flowering but when I had a little furtle (I LOVE that word!! ) the potatoes only seem to be approx 5cm long.

Am I ok to leave them in the ground a little longer to hopefully get bigger or is that as big as I'm going to get? I was hoping for a baking potato......

Yes Niandsa, if you leave them they will get bigger. They keep growing until all the foliage dies down in a month or so. It's up to you whether you have "new" potatoes now or wait to get bigger ones that you can bake.

Have you been keeping the well watered?

There is a fine balancing act between size to eat and beating the the slugs and blight.
The longer they are in, the less likely you are to have your din dins.
I would give them a real good watering then have another furtle in a week or 2.
If you have enough plants you could dig one up, you may be surprised.

I dug some Red Duke of York yesterday and had them for tea. While they were small they were very tasty! But yes if you leave them longer they will get bigger.

Got my first load of spuds out of the bag in the last couple of days. Big thanks to Potstubsdustbins as i normally water but don't feed the spuds in the bag but followed his/her (sorry - not sure which!) advice in a different thread and they are much bigger than previous years. Very pleased.

My pots as of this week, cant remember when I planted but it has to be nearing 10 weeks, we got a mixed bag 'super season of spuds collection', first time of doing this.
