First seeds sown..

We ( youngest 2 kids and I) sowed the first seeds of the year yesterday, 20 very early bush tom's, Latah I think they are called and some orange bell peppers.
I mixed up some seed compost and coir 50/50 ish and watered with a weak seaweed extract solution.
I will transplant them into individual pots as soon as first leaves appear, can these seedlings be put straight into mpc or do they still have to in seed compost at that stage?

Planted some seeds in seed compost last year and it was like building sand and wondered how a seseedling could break through a medium that was like wet cement! that's why I mixed some coir into i,, hoping to lighten it up a bit.

I always sow seed in MPC too. If its a small seed, I tend to mix in some vermiculite with it.

Those toms are probably called Latah rather than Latch They are a very early bush kind, and I know the company that sells them also has Orange Bell peppers, which I bought some seeds for but didn't sow yet. I'm interested to know how the Latahs turn out because they look good and I might try them next year.

By the way, you don't really need to feed seeds, give them time to sprout for a week or so.

You are right about the tom's name, they are indeed called latah and I really hate predictive text!! And for the life of me I cannot edit the post in my phone

Nat I'm another one who only uses mpc and for tiny seeds I use a plant pot as a sieve just to give them a light sprinkling of compost.

My good wife has just took delivery of my next lot of seeds, zebrune shallots and prairie fire chillies so will try them in mpc, well the kids will!

Hi,
Well the 'Latah' seeds I planted on Monday were through last night!! ( 11 of the 20 so far anyway)
Looking at some seeds left from last year and I found some carrot seeds but on the pack it says they dont last and they have to be planted the same year; would
I be wasting my time sowing them anyway just to see or is that a definite with carrot seeds?

tomorrow the kids will be on it with shallots, more chillies, onions and more toms..dont know whos more excited...

Germination for your carrot may be less than last year but I would be very surprised if you didn't get a crop. Parsnips are the only seed I make sure is fresh every year.

The carrots should be fine, I find they easily last two or three years.

Well done you for being so organised. Like most of the others I only use MPC and last year welded quite a bit into a fair size lump using a bit of water. Then left in the porch all summer until it was solid - and I mean solid as a hammer had no affect but....
I found that if I used my cheese grater it was brilliant for the top of seeds as it was very fine.
