OK, it was a stoopid idea . I've just tried it and you're absolutely right

I did some plastic bottles with tops on, undid tops and removed when seeds germinated.
I also did some with top cut off so they were more open. Not quite as good a start as the intact ones - but the plants could stay inside as they'd grow up though more.
Removing them is only a problem if you let the plants get too big - and the soil is sandy it seems to try to lift it.
But overall reasonably good to get seeds planted straight in the ground going.

I would have liked to fix them together with some wire so they stayed put - then they'd not have to be pushed in as deep which I think caused the problems removing them.

So yours were in the ground as opposed to hanging? If they're in the ground, and you aligned the handles you could thread them through with a ............................
.............curtain rod or broom handle

I planted out my outdoor toms and cucumbers using 2l coke bottles and only removed them once the plants out grew them.

The outdoor toms did brilliantly outperforming the ones in a mini greenhouse though started fruiting 3 weeks later. I'm still picking outdoor toms and cucumbers and am located in the East Midlands

Just looked at the photo - for those without the magazine to hand its a row of plastic bottles, suspended by their necks from a horizontal pole with some sort of wispy seedling inside. Top open but no other modification that I could spot.
TBH, I don't see how it could work as you can't get to the plant without carving up the bottle Watering would be fiddly too as you have to pour it down the neck of each bottle. Would have been nice to have an explanation alongside the photo.
I've seen something similar done with plastic milk containers threaded through the handle onto a pole - top cut off.
Plenty of ideas on Goggle...........

I thought it looked as if the top front of the bottle had been cut out of the middle one on the picture
