    Aren't there ground dwelling slugs too? As in undergound I mean, not as opposed to airborne slugs.

      I would suspect a very well rounded snail. Had this with one of my bean pots last year - took me three months to find the horror and when I did it was the largest I've seen! Still don't know how it hid for so long!

        Airborne slugs are just about the most horrible idea ever...

        I did find a mahusive slug nestled in a module around a very nervous brassica seedling once (he filled the 3cm module), but haven't found a culprit to cucumber massacre in the blowaway this time. On the plot though they probably live under the path or mulch - one of the old boys yesterday told me roofing felt detered them when used as cabbage collars, so I may make cucumber collars if I can find some...
