My peppers are not shooting

This is my second year of trying to grow veg.2 weeks ago I planted some peppers (red, orange and green) tomatoes and other veg. Everything has nice, big good green shoots except the peppers. How long does it take them to germinate as i have never tried to grow them before and there is no sign of life. I have them in a propugator in the window which catches the sun nearly all day so it is warm enough and I make sure the soil stays moist.

You seem to be doing it all right. May be duff seeds: I'd expect them to be up by now.


If you have any more, try chitting them on damp kitchen towel. That way, you can see if the seed forms a root, or doesn't do anything. If they're duff, post them back to supplier for a refund

I bought them last year in july on special offer �1 for a pkt of 10 and i planted all 10 I will leave them a little longer

Windowsills get very cold at night, and peppers don't like dramatic fluctuation. Try bringing them inside the curtain at night where it's warmer

(a steady day-and-night temp of 16c-20c would be ideal)

I have tomatoes in the same place and 11 out of the 12 i planted are growing.

Not all plants require the same conditions... my peppers (chillies) ALWAYS lag behind my tomatoes

My tomatoes have been up weeks longer than the peppers - who are now slowly and sleepily emerging! I find they like it warmer than the tomatoes to germinate - try moving the pot into a warm place!

I've learned that different pepper and chillis seeds require different temperature to germinate, and for me personally; I have more success germinating on my window sill compared to the heated propogator. I currently have ten babies sat in an unheated propogator. Two are sat in another unheated propogater, inside the 4tb. Heat and light are a bit useful. I wouldn't rule anything out. For years, I couldn't grow sweet mini red peppers, and this year, I've already killed a few through school girl errors. I've got the chillies I want this year, but only two days ago I raided my seed stasher as there was some sweet peppers that I really want to play with. These I am waiting for. I love growing chillies and sweet peppers are the end product is always rather cool.

I've got a small heated propagator on my kitchen windowsill. Tomatoes and chillies sown at the same time, tomatoes have been on the windowsill proper for a week and the chillies are only just starting to germinate.

That's what I've just done after only getting three plants out of seven seeds...and one of them isn't doing well. Sure enough two out of four on the wet kitchen towel germinated, so I won't have to waste time planting two duff seeds.

Yes, it's thanks to you good folk that I knew what to do, they're now sharing a pot under a trifle bowl in the greenhouse

I am using last year sweet pepper seed, 1st sowing 25/2, classified as failure on the 14/3. Reset on the 14/3 showed first green on 23/3 now at 60% germination.

Peppers are lazier than toms .....sure I read they can take up to 21 days ....
