fwiw I used:
2 x Gro-Lux 18W T8 2ft - Gro-Lux T8 26mm tubes - Fluorescent — (UK) Light bulbs, halogen lamps, spot lights and tubes by mail order in the UK at �9 each
1 x fluorescent batten fitting from the local lighting shop - �15
1 x 2m length of flex & plug - �2
some 1" wooden batten fashioned into a frame, and length of small-gauge chain, to adjustably hang the batten - �5
no heat whatsoever... but plenty of the strange pinky-red light, so draw the curtains to avoid giving the neighbours the wrong impression.
worked a treat for my tom seedlings last year.
