White Fly

Hi,

I've read lots about white fly being a problem in green houses but I have loads in my brassica bed on my allotment i.e. outside. Should I be worried about them? And is yes, how should I look to 'control' them? Organic/non-pesticide suggestions if possible please.

hi today i spot about 10 to 20 little white thing on 2 of my strawberry and they look like white ants but there is not such a thing soi guest are whitefly...but the strange thing is that they were all dead and resting on top of the compost... what do you suggest to do? i had last year a problem with aphid and very bad ( i didn't know anything about it and i thought was some compost stick to the leaves lol) but i used the chilli and garlic spray and it worked... now i'm scared that something will happen and i don't want to use pesticide (gardening for me is a new passion and i don't like cheat...) do you think that i should do a weekly spray just to prevent or wait until i get the problem again? i build 2 cages covered with fleece so all my veggie they will be ok ?( in the cages i've got carrot, peas, broad beans, spring onion, beetroot, then after frost, tomatoes, peppers, chilly, marigold,nasturtium)

They are the discarded skins of greenfly, Sarico.

Have another look under the leaves and you'll soon see all the live greenfly. Squish them !

Will these be the same whitefly that i have in my compost bin? I'm trying to get rid of them but they are not budging - have tried wetting it with urine and covering with shredded paper and a layer of compost. any suggestions?

When I saw them I straight looked under the leaves but nothing. I check again this morning nothing again. What happen? They are gone or they are hiding? Anyway I have some old net courtain and I remember that in one of your video you use the on carrots. This will help a lot?

You don't get whitefly in a compost bin: they are sap suckers.

you could well have fruit flies or fungus gnats in your compost: wrapping your kitchen scraps in a newspaper parcel will sort them

It will keep them out if there are no gaps, yes. But if the eggs are already on the plants, you'll just create a perfect little environment for them.

thanks two sheds... i've already tried this last year and it worked... but i only use when i realized that i have aphid on my courgette... do you think is better to prevent and keep doing a weekly spray?

I don't know if it's a preventative Sarico. You could try, and report back.
I found the spray not effective against aphids, just whitefly.

ok i think just wait and will see... maybe at the first fly i will do a periodic spray but now just leave like that.... anyway my strawberry weren't in this cage so hopefully i didn't prison them in a party. i hope that everytime i open to harvest something in the future they don't sneak in it... anyway this is my first year and i already know that something bad will happen...not a big disaster just a little one ( i hope)

I bought a strawberry plant from a car boot sale and a couple of days later found what might be whitefly? But they are not flys? They look like large white fleas? Is that white fly, aphids or green fly? Should I move them away from the rest of my plants or are they only attracted to certain plants?

Whitefly is like a tiny moth ~ not like a flea I wouldn't say (they don't jump/spring)

Greenfly might remind you of a flea, in shape. They're definitely green

Perfect timing - I was just about to do a search for 2S spray recipe which I remembered seeing months ago - came back from over a week away to find my plants all alive, but the mint was totally infested with teeny white flecks. All over the soil and everything. *shiver* Immediately made a simple vinegar spray but it's had minimal effect.

Heard garlic powder and tabasco sauce could sub for fresh ingredients so trying it out since haven't gone shopping yet.
