Probably a daft question about Broad Beans

I've discovered that there is a broad bean called Aquadulce that can be sown in the autumn. Ok this is the daft question - does it actually grow in the autumn, over winter and beans come in the spring, or does it grow and produce beans all before the winter comes? I figured it was the former bit I wasn't sure!

Hi GG, your first theory is correct,Aquadulce grows minimal through the winter but then grows quickly through the spring, one of the great advantages of it, and any other autumn sown beans, is that the crop usually arrives before the dreaded blackfly,

I sowed aquadulce last November, and started harvesting in late April/early May. Finished the harvest last week - I sowed 18 beans and they all came up, and required extremely minimal care. As already mentioned, only the very last of the harvest was affected by blackfly, and even then not too much.

They were delicious, and I will definitely sow them again this year, but more than 18 this time! We got about 20 generous portions this year.

Super Aquedulce is even better!
the main problem with over-wintered ones are winter gales, which can ruin them. They shrug off snow, but gales are the thing. You can't cloche them either, because then they grow too soft.

You only get a crop a week or two before spring sowings, but I like having something green growing over the bare winter months

I sowed these last year and they were vigorous over winter into the spring, but then my spring planted beans actually caught up with the overwintered aquedulce, so I haven't bothered this time. Probably our climate up north!

Think I might to overwinter one or two plants in my growhouse. It would be great to get some early beans - they are �1 for 500g in Asda at the moment, for a saucerfull!
I've spent a fiver in the past week on them!

I planted some in the greenhouse border and we got a REALLY early crop this year - it was brilliant when there was nothing much else in the garden. Plus they were finished by the time I needed to plant my tomatoes so it was success all round for us....and plan to repeat for next year too
