Earthing up?

I have a few spuds in containers. In the past I have always had enough spare soil/ home made compost to top them up as they grow. This year however I have finally flattened my source & don't want to dig a hole in the garden. My wife suggest buying topsoil or compost but that will make them very expensive spuds. Wondered if grass cuttings would be any good.
