Sorry, back to parsnips

Hi All, I took your advice and have put my parsnip seeds on wet kitchen roll to germinate. This was 2 weeks ago and they haven't budged. Does this mean the seed is not going to grow, or have I not waited long enough yet? They're covered and in the airing cupboard.
Would appreciate your further help.

Might your seeds be last year's? Parsnip seeds have a mighty short shelf life, and tend only to work the year they were produced.

I think the sow by date is 2010, but I suppose this could still be the cause. I'll check it out.

The thing I do to get my parsnips started is to put them right in front of the wood burner for an evening (when it's lit, of course) and that usually kick starts them into life. I find they need a burst of warmth to get them going.

I also water them with warm water, that often helps. They do take a while to germinate though.

Hi, I put my parsnip seed in a seed tray, back at the end of January, in the conservatory and they all came up after a few weeks, at the begginnig of March the roots were coming out the bottom of the tray, so I planted them out worring they were going to die from frost, and now they are massive and doing really well.
I did read after i'd done them that the seeds should go in sideways and did start worrying, but they managed it. The seeds were self saved by a friend last year. If your still having trouble and would like some PM and i can send you some.

From my experience, they take weeks to do anything, then you plant them up carefully in loo roll middles, water gently, see them start to appear again then nowt I think I am just giving up on them.

That's really kind Poppy, thanks, I'll let you know. My grandaughters planted some last year in September without my knowledge and I uprooted them last month, so they germinated! Ironic! I think I need a bit more patience.

This is about my fourth time of trying Shirl and probably the last. I was interested to see that lots of people on the Vine advised germinating them first, so I've put some straight into the soil and the others in the airing cupboard. Neither have moved yet!

Mine are coming thru' beautifully - amongst the peas. They are the ones sown last year. Just goes to show some DO take ages to come through.

I did the same, mine have taken about 4 weeks and they are only now showing a teeny bit of germination. I sometimes move them to a warm radiator to give a bit more warmth. I have used tweezers today to put just 3 of the seeds that have a tiny bit of growth into loo rolls. This is my first time so I will see if they go on to produce anything. The parsnips in the ground have not done anything yet. I do like a nice roast parsnip so will keep fingers crossed!

Me too BumbleB, but I've yet to taste my own, which must be better than shop bought. Roasted in butter. Delish.
