Earthing Up

Hi Tattie-Maniacs

Having enjoyed a week now of quick green growth on my 1st and 2nd earlies, how much earthing up, if any, should I be doing in your opinions???

I chuck a shovelful of my home compost on mine until mid may, to completely cover all growth mainly to stop them being frosted.

Can I pull up the earth from between the rows over the shoots instead? Pretty sure my mum never used compost

No probs with that Fiona, if you've allowed enough space between then it's the easiest way to do it. You only really need to be careful with some of the salad types which form spuds very near the surface as you can uncover them by accident as you early up. Also, if you're growing through card or whatever then you won't have any soil to early up so it isn't always that simple!

Thanks Alison. I have 2ft between rows so hoping it will be ok. Will earth up very carefully May be a daft question but do I completely cover the foilage?

At this time of year they could still get frosted, so yes, cover them up totally
And if you run out of soil to earth up before the frosts are over, chuck a piece of fleece over the row

I don't have this problem as mine aren't showing their faces yet! On a plus point, the onions and shallots are sproutinig well and I don't have to earth those up so no extra work which is always good....

My spuds in containers are going barmy - I have to earth them up every couple of days, and the Mayan Gold is now so tall, it's out of the top of the container! Good job I've got some fleece to hand...

My spuds are in containers as well. For me thats the way to go. Just shove some more MPC on top. Mine are still hiding at the moment though.

Mine are sitting on the desk next to me as I type!

T&M only delivered yesterday and they only delivered one spud bag (rather than the three I was expecting ) so I may be a little too late for the spud boat this year.

Still I got them on special offer so I think I'll pop 'em in a bag tomorrow (without chitting) and hope for the best! Only �3.99 for the 5 seed potatoes, 3 spud bags (allegedley!) and 5 packs of veg seeds! So not too much to risk!
