My kitchen blind killed my seedlings....

How typical is that... I was going to transfer my seedlings onto their raised beds tomorrow, when this evening suddenly my kitchen blind came crashing down taking 6 little pots with it, making sure to crush all plants in them.

Thankfully I still have some survivors, but I am very upset.
Doesn't help that when OH put the blind back up and it came crushing down again (!) it took another 3 pots with it cause my hubby couln't be bothered to clear the window sill before attempting the repair work.

What a shame Tiachica, I do hope you managed to save some of your seedlings. I think if your OH was going to do the blind repair you could have moved the seedlings from the windowsill - yes, no-
And seedlings shouldn't go straight from the windowsill to an outdoor bed. They need to be hardened off first. Hope you manage to salvage something.

Yes, I could have moved the seedlings myself too... best while I was bathing the baby, getting it dressed, giving the bedtime bottle and putting the baby to bed. *sorry... still angry.

luckily the kitchen window sill is very cold, so I was hoping this would be enough hardening off for them.

Oh, how annoying... Last summer I put a row of seedlings in little pots, about 16 of them, on the outside window sill, as I thought they were getting a bit too hot in the plastic greenhouse... a few hours later I was inside washing-up, and decided to open the window...knocked em all flying... Managed to salvage a few of them but couldn't believe I'd been so thick. The worst of it was, my OH wasn't around so I couldn't find a way of making it his fault

Just to add, tiachica, I reckon your seedlings will need a bit longer to harden them off - it might be too much of a shock to them if they go straight into the outside beds.

I think the seedlings will need a bit more hardening off Tiachica. It's not just about temperature - although partly that, overnight temps are about 2 degrees here so I hope your kitchen is warmer than that, mine never falls below 15. It's also about the wind in their faces and the rain in their hair. They have to get used to all that gradually.

Hallo Ladies,

well after a night of recovering, I was sad to discover, that despite my best efforts none of the seedlings had a future. :-(

Oh well... it's not too late yet, so I have sown new beans and peas straight into the bed outside, as well as carrots, beats and onions and put new brassicas into my peat modules.

I also used the sunshine to put some nusturtiums and sweet peas. Hopefully no more disasters!

That's a shame Tiachica. it's upsetting to lose seedlings but as you say you have plenty of time to grow more.
What kind of beans did you plant out. Broad beans will be fine out there but other beans are not frost hardy. I don't plant mine til May. Your other seeds should be OK. Good luck.

Hallo Alice,

I planted out borlotti and French dwarfs. I realize they are not frost hardy, but I am gonna take my chances. :-) We most likely won't get any frost anymore here, right beside the coast. Of course, I could be wrong, but if this is the case, I still have plenty to resow in May if I lose these ones to frost. There is only a very small veg patch in my garden, and the 20 or so seeds I have are plenty.
