we have 5 sites here two are mahoosive and you are on the list for decades to get in, I am down for the two smaller ones, manor hall and The Gardens, so ask your mate which one he is on, i am very excited but not putting any planting on hold, we are poised to go full on in the garden, last piece of lawn came up today, i must get some more photos done, but it looks such a mess as it is, it will however look wonderful when it is full of veg

so am i am still assuming a lot of my stuff will still be in containers, and planning accordingly, hence the potato/tomato towers, besides i love containers, so easy for salad stuff and the odd experimental rather than filling a whole bed.

I still think we need a Container Growing Section

Well, obviously the answer is yes. Do it as a 'gut instinct', then wait for your intellect to catch up. It's very likely to be a year or so before you are granted the holy grail of an allotment anyway.

Builders thick rubble sacks are �1.50 - �2.00 for 10. Punch some holes and these make admirable potatoe growers if the Co-op don't come good.

I would use compost sacks, at least you are recycling.... you could pop in to your local QD and get some of these these rubber tub things for about �3 each.





Regarding those Wilko planters, aren't they about 7 quid? I would probably think about using a popup garden sack if I was going to by something from them there and then..... I cannot walk past Wilkies wothout buying stuff from them.

Rubble sacks...double bagged with holes in the bottom...if you can't get the free buckets.

If you are really a potential scavenger gardener...join freecycle...it will save you so much if you are quick off the mark.

about how many root pots per how many litres (or similar) of volume?

well i've gone and bought the rubble sacks
10 sacks for �2.68 from B&Q
they are 535mm x 820mm

how many root potatoes do i want to put in those?
are we talking 4 or 5 due to size?

i read some time ago that the potatoes seem to do better in more confined spaces, i.e. more potatoes per area

any thoughts?

it is a definite case of spring fever i think, plus i had some REALLY good news on the allotment front today.

seems i am NOT 8th on the list after all, but she thinks i might get one this year.

right i'm thinking 30 ltrs of compost in each bag and 3 tubers?
how does that sound?

do you all stick fertiliser in before you plant your potatoes or leave it just to the compost?

if you use fertiliser, which would you recommend?
