  • Picking Cabbage

Ok I know this is a really silly question, but I'm new to this so....
I've got the first of my cabbages ready but do I just cut them off at ground level or are you meant to pull them up?

Caroline I normally cut them off with secateurs and then dig the root out.

      Thanks Lesley.

I've heard rumours about picking at certain times of the day (ie first thing in the morning) is there anything in that? Or am I best waiting till shortly before OH will be cooking?

Oh I don't know. I just pick them when I want them. If we are having cabbage for tea I would pick it in the afternoon.

If you cut it of with a sharp knie & then cut a cross in the stump you can get a second crop of leaves to eat they won't form heads like cabbage but they'll still taste good.

When you finally dig up the root, dont put it in the compost just in case it carries club root. either burn it or throw it in the rubbish bin.
