can anyone help? as a newy I planted my raspberry cans together last spring and want to know if I can dig them up to split as this years new growth is a bit rubbish or should I just buy some more.

If they are summer fruiting you can dig them up in the Autumn and split them up then. Making sure that they are 18ins apart and 5 feet between rows.

Summer raspberries fruit on this years canes (the new growth) so if they have made new canes do not cut those but cut out the old ones. If they haven't then you will have to take a gamble that they will grow.

If they are Autumn fruiting ones, then it is best that you leave them until winter. Dig them up, and move them, to the spacings as above then in January you can cut back the new growth, as Autumn ones fruit on the new growth.

It maybe that these are just getting going Sally (like the apples - see other post) Unless you've put them in the wrong place I'd leave them where they are & prune them as Lottie says. If you can get hold of some Manure, give them a good mulch in the back end as well that will help them to build up.

If you move them you'll just be in the same position next year as you are now & they will go on being productive for around 15 years if you look after them.
