What size tap?

I get headaches from these systems. Had similar problem with connector for pond filter. Measured it up but couldn't find anything on net. Emailed supplier who sent part which fitted but I couldn't see where their dimensions came from.

I think someone came up with the solution earlier--switch to a 1/2" tap, connectors for which can even be found in Tescos for few pence.

Aye,

a 3/4 to 1/2 reducer and a 1/2" outside tap with a bit of ptfe tape.

It seems strange you have all these problems with taps. Here nowadays the piping for water uses PEX with brass compression fittings. Pipes are connected with BSP threading and outdoor taps usually are 1/2" with a 3/4" BSP male thread. The quick release connectors are usually 3/4" female and are usually used on hosepipes. I would use a jubilee clip to make sure the hose stays on the fitting.
