Water Butt useless/interesting info

Was given a free 200L water butt recently. The tall slim ones are 100L, �24 at Wicks at the moment, includes all the necessary, my free one didn't, just a tap and lid.

I planted a rose at the side of my shed last year and unfortunately it sits in a wet hole (didn't know it was ) made worse by no guttering. So spent �25 on mini guttering that did just the one side of my 14'X6' shed roof.

This last weekend it rained, not heavy but point is it filled my butt a third. 70L in just a couple of days! that amazed me, thought it would take a lot longer, made me think the 100L wouldn't be much use. Water is �1.60 for 1000L. Height of summer I guess I use 30L a day on baskets and Toms so the butt won't last long and rainfall in summer isn't plentiful. My 200L is worth 32p, payback time 80days. Worth the hassle? yeah I think so, be able to water my Blueberry correctly and doing my bit for the Panda's.

Interesting info; Amount of water globally never varies, just the position. Think it's all in the UK at the moment.

Get an IBC, it may work out even cheaper over time.

Water is so precious over here, i wish i hand water butts and guttering up but it just does not seem to rain. i seriously do not know what this area is going to do

BM, the OH thinks i am completely crazy and gets very frustrated with me. I recycle all the water i can. I even have a hose pipe coming out of the garage from my washing machine water! i safe my shower water and have time limits on showers do not run the taps to let the water get hot, and you know that saying if its yellow ..........

It has not rained for about 2 months and months before that one night

Obviously I don't know your setup but I'm thinking more about harvesting the small amount you do get. Do you have gutters on your property that can have diverters fitted, or even a simple lean to structure that you can attach guttering to. As I say, I don't know your setup or property but yes, although you are recycling, you also need to harvest the rain you do get.

You can work out the area of a roof and then the annual rainfall and think about how much storage you'd need to catch all that rain.
I think Nic worked it out at almost two IBCs worth of rain off an 8x6 shed, but obviously (apart from the recently exceptionally wet weather) it's normally spread out over a year.

Properties over here do not have guttering in my area, the roof actually over hangs a lot more than in the UK, so would have to put some very heavy large duty brackets up. you can buy it but its expensive compared to the UK, its just would not be cost effective
A friend up the road is not on mains water and only gets a delivery allowance every 2weeks summer and 3 weeks winter, he fitted guttering all around his house, sheds etc and had a large 10,000 deposit tank fitted, it rained more the year before last and he recored everything down and for the whole year it was a lot less than 1,000 litres and his house is double/tripe mine (5 bed).

If it does rain i am a bucket lady as the water sits on the surface and i bucket it everywhere needed buckets to catch off the roof, its a mad house i tell you

Its really sad, the old farmers are so distressed about it, i am going to keep a chart to keep track of the rain. And people say theres no such thing as global warming
