      not even to give them a start then plant them out in raised beds ?

        The tap root grows very quickly. By the time you can see the seed leaves the root may be getting to the bottom of the loo roll. I personally like to grow them a bit longer than that, as planting them out at that stage I think has an increased risk of some failures
