Lawn aerations really sounds like a chore which should be done according to the conditions. From what I read here and from what I read in other forums, articles and guides, it all depends on how much traffic goes through your lawn, and how compacted the soil gets. I believe that the type of grass also matters, as some types probably get worn off faster.

For a field I would recommend a mahoosive tractor & a 5/7 gang zigzag harrow

This is what I use at work! A Weidenmann Terra Spike, cracking bit of kit if you have 36K to spare!

I have a fairly large area of grass and I used to hire some equipment once a year (and a hefty rotavator back in the days before No Dig), but inevitably it rained and made the job miserable, so I bought some Agri-Fab gear which is cost effective enough not to be too painful, and means I can do the job when the mood/weather takes me

Agri-Fab have a frame onto which can be mounted hollow-tine or shark curved aerators, or a dethatch rake (or a roller), and weights can be placed on top to provide more penetration, then just tow it around the lawn

They were about £100 each, from memory.
