Raised bed construction advice please.

Just to warn you my straw bales grew. So maybe don't have them too close to the top.
Also the suggestion of using any mud/soil from your path is good, my neighbour did that, but sounds like your soil isn't very deep?
Can you get soil improver/ compost from your council, or would it be a problem lifting that up?

I don't have any path/soil to use - its just a thin layer of soil over building rubble.
The council sell the "compost" - its a couple of pounds a bag - may as well buy the real thing

You could chuck cardboard loo rolls and egg cartons in the bottom, unless, like me you're using the loo rolls to grow seeds in and saving the egg cartons for chitting spuds!

Maybe scrunch or shred waste paper and chuck that in the bottom too?

I'm trying to think of things you'll have in the house already or have to bring up there anyway!

We put our veg waste directly in the bed as well, as a layer. �2 a bag council compost, thats a rip off. They give it free at our allotment, though the allotment charges 25p a wheelbarrow. (but in a very relaxed way, most don't pay)

That's what I'm trying to think of too vikki I try to stick to a policy of "once its up here it never leaves here". I'll chuck any composting material in there too.

I think community groups can have it free but individuals have to buy it

What are you going to use instead Chris? I'm curious!!

I only put it in there as my compost bins are full. The bed is in the garden that the chickens are in, so I can't really grow much in there anyway - I'm going to get rid of it from there st some point anyway!
