Update for 2020

Made mk1.2 onion set spacer today, slightly larger spaces between onion

Also only 8 holes (was 9 last year)

Super glued rubber section with a sprinkle of Bicarb of soda to "instant" set the glue.

This version can also be rolled up for easy storage

8 x 6 = 52 onions (5' x 2.5' feet)

I somehow don't think you will make a fortune if you patent your template, but if it works for you that's all that matters.

He has a channel running centrally along his onion bed into which he sprinkles fertiliser.

The offset is now at the front, also there is 2 layers of planting layouts, big holes = onions, little holes for beetroot

After using mk1.2 on my mixed beet long narrow planting bed I identified some shortcomings.

So mk1.3...



+ White border spine is where you deep dib for aeration & dropping fertilizer.
+ Central half moon notch, when you lay the mat on the soil you dig a short bit of cane into the forward notch so that when you step on you've marked your position.
+ Super glue is strong enough for this rubber material.
+ There are 2 layers of planting patterns big holes onions, small holes beetroot / chard.
+ Pattern is "spreading" concentric circles

I am totally lost off!

I don't normally agree with VC (well not in print anyway) but in this instance while planting onion sets I use the 'bung it in and hope' rule. Its worked for me in the past. I would love to see the final results of your research?

I'm sure you'll be back to tell us your results.
Personally, I bung 'em in wherever there's a space and don't overthink it - or even "think" it.

Snadger, we haven't seen the results of the 2019 version yet so may be best to keep yours under wraps. I'm certainly not showing mine to anybody.

Some of the smaller holes aren't in the right places still but I've had a brain wave. Rather make a whole new mat I'm just gonna punch the holes then glue the little waste punching's back into the old holes.
