  • Butternut squash

This is the second one I've picked, not quite ripe, but I have a few more growing and I am reducing the load on the plants.

Mine are starting to turn a bit more orangey now. I have a few nice large ones, i think this may be the biggest.

Last week when I was on the plot i had flowers but no fruit on my butternut squash plant. Fingers cross I've got some fruit on the plants when I go down the plot later tonight.

Here are our Waltham butternuts from this year. We got 12 fruit from 2 plants grown in a 2x1m raised bed. Not that they stayed confined to that bed...they rambled off all sides, half way up the lawn, through the back border, all the way round the back of another raised bed and towards the shed. They were harvested a few weeks ago and left to cure in the sun. Only two (not in the photo) were picked not fully ripe. Now they're on a shoe rack in the loft. The big boy top left weighs 5.5kg!

Why didn't I think of using shoe racks for this purpose?

Starting to wish I'd grown some this year.
They store well too...................maybe one to grow in 2020.
