young apple tree protection - advice needed

    Although I've never tested how long bare-root trees packed in straw and plastic sheeting will last (I feel a project coming on for spring 2015 ), my gut feeling is that a bundle of trees (packed as in the pictures above) would probably remain alive for months, simply chucked outside in a shady corner of the garden.

    The thing that will kill them is if they are not kept at temperatures typical for this time of year (0 to 10'C) which will bring them prematurely out of dormancy, or extremely cold weather (-10'C) which might kill the roots.
